How to apply Acoustical Sealants

One of the greatest benefits of acoustical sealants is the massive reduction of sound transmission. It was developed for acoustical sealing around cut-outs, joints and edges, drywall partitions, curtain walls and corridors. Acoustical sealants are also paintable and can bond to wood, glass, concrete, metal, gypsum and plastic. What is more, acoustical sealants are very easy to clean up, generally requiring only soap and water.

Acoustical sealants are a cost effective solution for sound barriers that can easily be applied for DIY projects. Here are a few basic tips for making application effortless and stress free.

Surface Preparation

For good adhesion, the joint surfaces must be clean and dry. All surface dirt, dust, loose particles or other contaminants needs to be removed from the surface before you apply the sealant. If the surface is not free of contaminants, the particles can impede adhesion.

Weather

You should postpone application if the weather is very humid; the process is best done in slightly colder temperatures for an optimum seal. In fact, the sealant should never be allowed to get hotter than around 55 degrees. As well, the sealant should not have direct exposure to direct sunlight or extreme cold.

Priming

One of the advantages of acoustical sealants is that priming is generally not needed. If priming is not required, you will save a lot of time and money. However, consult a professional or the read the instructions to double check the details for proper application.

Application

Acoustical sealants are easy to apply and come with conventional caulking equipment. Once applied, all you need to do is cover it for 24 hours to prevent dirt or tracking that can inhibit adhesion. After it is dry, you can lightly sand the sealant to a smooth finish. Here is a step by step procedure for applying acoustical sealants.

  • Make sure that the surface is clean a dry.
  • To protect your hands, wear a pair of gloves.
  • Open a window or door for good ventilation.
  • Always use a caulking gun to apply the acoustical sealant.
  • Cut the nozzle to make an appropriate sized hole.
  • Place the first bead of sealant on the surface.
  • Beads should not be more than half an inch in diameter.
  • Apply around ¼ inch of sealant to the edge of the surface.
  • Cover the surface carefully and allow the sealant to dry 24 hours.
  • If you are painting the surface, allow the sealant to dry for 48 hours.
  • Sand the dry sealant lightly if needed.

Clean Up

Excess sealant near the joint interface or on tools can easily be removed. If you use a solvent-based sealant then clean the area with mineral spirits. Water based sealant can simply be removed with soap and water. To make removal of the sealant a lot less labor intense, clean the area while the sealant is still wet.
