Heavy vehicles are often utilized for extended periods and carry heavy loads. Consequently, as they operate continuously, some of their components may sustain damage, especially those requiring a strong connection. While mechanical fasteners are a traditional solution, they can be heavy and prone to corrosion. Welding, another common method, can lead to panel deformation and fatigue.

The Advantages of Transportation Tapes

If your business relies on a fleet of transport vehicles, consider using transportation tapes. These tapes feature adhesive on one side of the foam substrate, and under compression these provide an effective long lasting seal preventing the ingress of air, dust and water.

One significant advantage of transportation tapes over caulked silicone sealants is the ease, speed and neatness of installation, requiring minimal labor. Transportation tapes also help minimize or prevent surface irregularities and seams, common with other methods.

Transportation tapes offer additional benefits, such as eliminating potential sources of corrosion and cracking, improving waterproofing, and reducing impact, noise, and vibration. These tapes are also lightweight, ensuring buses and trucks do not gain unnecessary weight.

Selecting the correct Tapes for use in Transportation

When choosing transportation tapes for your vehicles, consider the materials used in the carrier and adhesive. These materials directly affect the tapes’ tensile and tear strength and their ability to conform to surfaces.

Foam is an excellent carrier material for transportation purposes, as foam tapes can distribute loads over a large surface area, resulting in minimal stress and a long service life. They also conform well to irregular surfaces and provide watertight sealing.

Double sided acrylic adhesive tapes are ideal for buses, trucks and trailers such as refrigerated trailers and tautliner trailer roof bows. They offer good adhesion to various materials, resist ultraviolet radiation, operate over a wide temperature range, and have a long lifespan.

Maximizing Norseal V760 and V780 Tapes

Two notable series of transportation tapes you can utilize are the Norseal V760 and V780 series. The Norseal V760 is a closed-cell PVC foam sealant with a pressure-sensitive adhesive on one side. Its high-density structure and tiny cells make it effective for sealing and dampening vibration, which is common in buses and trucks.

On the other hand, the Norseal V780 features a closed-cell polyvinyl chloride foam substrate with a one-sided, pressure-sensitive adhesive. This tape can withstand weathering, oxidation, electrolysis and prevent water infiltration on irregular surfaces.
